The Church of San Nicolás de Soria (in Spanish, Iglesia de San Nicolás) is an old church in Soria, Spain. Today, only its beautiful Romanesque ruins remain. It was once a Roman Catholic church. This historic site was officially recognized as a Bien de Interés Cultural (which means "Property of Cultural Interest") in 1962. This special title helps protect important historical places in Spain.
What Happened to the Church?
Over many years, the Church of San Nicolás slowly fell into ruin. In 1858, the roof of the main part of the church, called the nave, collapsed. This left the building open to the sky.
Later, in 1908, an important part of the church was moved. The beautiful entrance, known as the portal, was carefully taken from San Nicolás. It was then moved to another church in Soria, called San Juan de Rabanera. This helped save the portal from further damage.
By 1933, more parts of the church were becoming unsafe. Some of the remaining walls were taken down to prevent them from falling. Today, only a part of the rounded end of the church, called the apse, and some side walls are still standing.
Cool Discoveries at the Ruins
Even though the church is mostly ruins, it still holds secrets! In 1978, workers were doing some restoration work on the remaining walls. During this work, they made an exciting discovery.
They found old paintings, called frescoes, hidden on one of the walls. These frescoes showed a famous event in the life of Saint Thomas Becket. He was an important historical figure. Finding these paintings gave us a glimpse into the church's past and the art that once decorated its walls.
