The Church of San Nicolás de Soria (in Spanish: Iglesia de San Nicolás) is an old church in Soria, Spain. Today, only parts of it remain as ruins. It was built in the Romanesque style. This means it had thick walls, round arches, and strong, simple designs. The church was once a Roman Catholic place of worship. In 1962, it was named a Bien de Interés Cultural. This is a special title in Spain for important historical places.

What Happened to the Church?

Over time, the Church of San Nicolás became a ruin. In 1858, the roof of the main part of the church fell down. This left the building open to the sky.

Moving Parts and New Discoveries

More changes happened to the church over the years. In 1908, a special entrance, called a portal, was moved. It was taken from the Church of San Nicolás to another church nearby. This church is called San Juan de Rabanera in Soria.

Later, in 1933, some more walls of the church were taken down. These walls were not safe and could have fallen. So, they were removed to prevent accidents.

In 1978, workers were doing some repairs on the ruins. During this work, they made an exciting discovery. They found old paintings on one of the remaining walls. These paintings are called frescoes. The frescoes showed a famous historical event. They showed the killing of Saint Thomas of Canterbury. He was an important religious leader long ago.

What You Can See Today

Today, you can still visit the ruins of the Church of San Nicolás. You can see parts of the apse. The apse is the rounded end of a church. Some side walls also still stand. These ruins remind us of the church's long history. They also show us the beautiful Romanesque style it once had.
