San Pedro (pronounced sam PEH-dro) is a local area or "commune" in central Chile. It's part of the Melipilla Province, which is located in the Santiago Metropolitan Region.

About San Pedro

San Pedro covers an area of about 787.5 square kilometers. In 2002, a study counted 7,549 people living there. Most of the people in San Pedro live in the countryside, as it's considered a completely rural area. Between 1992 and 2002, the number of people living in San Pedro grew by about 11.9%.

People and Population

The 2002 study showed that out of the 7,549 people living in San Pedro, there were 4,080 men and 3,469 women. This means there were more men than women living in the commune at that time.

How San Pedro is Governed

San Pedro is a "commune," which is a type of local government area in Chile. It's managed by a group called a municipal council. The leader of this council is called an alcalde, which is like a mayor. The alcalde is chosen by the people in an election every four years.

Local Leaders

From 2012 to 2016, the alcalde of San Pedro was Florentino Flores Armijo. He was part of the Christian Democratic Party. The council members who worked with him were:

  • Emilio Cerda Sagurie
  • Jeremías Vilches Mondaca
  • Samuel Espinoza Vilches
  • Avelino Farías Piña
  • Juan Ignacio Zúñiga Godoy
  • Pedro Ulloa Ulloa

National Representation

San Pedro is also part of larger areas for national elections. For example, when people vote for members of the Chamber of Deputies (which is like a house of representatives), San Pedro is in the 31st electoral district. This district also includes several other towns. The people from San Pedro also vote for members of the Senate, which is another part of the national government. San Pedro is part of the 7th senatorial constituency.
