A Long History
The story of the Iglesia de San Pedro began way back in 1604. That's when a small chapel was first built on this very site. Imagine, people have been coming to this location to worship for over 400 years!
Building and Rebuilding
As the town of La Felguera grew, the small chapel became too small. So, in the 1880s, work started on a much larger, new church. This new building was designed to serve the growing community.
However, history took a turn in the 1930s with the Spanish Civil War. This was a difficult time in Spain, and many buildings, including churches, were damaged or destroyed. The Iglesia de San Pedro was one of those buildings that needed a lot of repair after the conflict.
A New Beginning
After the war ended, the community worked hard to rebuild their church. The reconstruction efforts took place in the 1940s. Finally, in 1954, the church was completed and officially opened. This means the church you see today has been standing for over 70 years!
What Does It Look Like?
The architect who designed the church was Francisco Zuvillaga. He chose a style called "Neo-Romanesque." This means the church looks like older Romanesque buildings, which were popular many centuries ago. These buildings often have strong, rounded arches and thick walls.
The church is dedicated to Saint Peter, one of the most important figures in Christian history. It's a place where people gather for services and community events.
