What's in a Name?
San Pedro is named after Saint Peter. This is a common practice in many places.
A Look Back in Time
San Pedro has a long history. When the nearby Alajuela Province was created in 1782, this area was known as Targúás. At that time, fewer than 100 people lived here.
The name San Pedro first appeared in official papers in 1819. By 1846, San Pedro was the biggest district in Santa Bárbara. It had 1,000 residents!
In 1852, a local resident named Pedro Saborío suggested building a Catholic church. San Pedro was considered as a spot for the church. However, because many communities helped pay for it, the church was built in a central spot in Santa Bárbara.
Between 1924 and 1928, San Pedro got its first running water pipes. This was a big step forward for the community.
Fun and Culture
San Pedro is known for its vibrant culture.
Music and Gatherings
The Típico Copey is a famous place for live music. People from all over the Central Valley come to enjoy music here. It's usually busy on Friday and Saturday evenings, and Sunday afternoons. The name comes from a special copey tree near the main church.
San Pedro is even mentioned in an old poem from 1900 called "Poesía de Turno." The poem talks about San Pedro as a place where people gather. Also, the Antidio Cabal Cultural Foundation is based here. This group helps share the works of a Spanish poet and thinker named Antidio Cabal.
Pastor the Cow
San Pedro is home to a very special cow named Pastor. Pastor is a Brahman cow who loves to drink Coca-Cola! This unique cow is worth more than $3,000. Once, Pastor drank 14 bottles of Coca-Cola during a horse show!
Annual Festival
Every year, usually in late June or early July, San Pedro hosts a big festival. It celebrates Saint Peter, the district's namesake. Many people come to this festival. You can find amusement rides, live music concerts, and exciting horse shows. There are also fireworks displays. Traditional Catholic events, like liturgical masses, are also part of the celebration.

San Pedro cares about education.

Local Soccer Teams
Asociación Deportiva Fraternidad de Santa Bárbara was a well-known soccer club. It started in San Pedro in 1947. The club played in the second and third divisions of FEDEFUT. One of its first players was Pedro Sánchez Soto from San Pedro. The club stopped playing in the late 1990s.
"Fatties versus Skinnies" Game
San Pedro is famous for its "Gordos y Flacos" (which means "Fatties versus Skinnies") soccer game. This fun game happens every year at the end of the San Pedro festivals, usually in late June.
The first game was held in 1975. It was organized by supporters of the Asociación Deportiva Fraternidad club. They wanted to raise money for the church. Instead of buying uniforms, they came up with a clever idea: have "fat" players play against "skinny" players! This made it easy to tell the teams apart. The game is so popular that it brings spectators and media from all over Costa Rica to San Pedro.
In 2013, San Pedro hosted the "Category B Student Football" Championship. These games were played in the Central Plaza, right in front of the church.
