San Sebastián de Garabandal, often just called Garabandal, is a small village in the mountains of northern Spain. It's found in a region called Cantabria, about 600 meters (nearly 2,000 feet) above the sea.
Garabandal is about 55 kilometers (35 miles) from Santander, the capital city of Cantabria. It's also about 400 kilometers (250 miles) from Madrid, the capital of Spain. The village has a population of around 300 people.
The Garabandal Events
From 1961 to 1965, four young schoolgirls from Garabandal said they saw and heard messages from Saint Michael the Archangel and the Blessed Virgin Mary. The girls were Mari Loli Mazón, Jacinta Gonzalez, Mari Cruz Gonzalez, and Conchita Gonzalez.
These events, which people call "apparitions," happened thousands of times. They attracted many people to the village. Witnesses reported seeing unusual things, and some of these events were even filmed or photographed.
Today, Garabandal is a place where many Roman Catholics and people of other faiths go to visit. The Catholic Church has stated that it does not officially approve these apparitions. However, the local bishop now allows people to visit the village for pilgrimages.
Because Garabandal is in a remote mountain area and is not easy to reach, it has mostly stayed the same as it was in 1961.
