Sancho d'Avila (born September 21, 1523 – died 1583) was an important Spanish general. He was known for his military skills during a time of many conflicts in Europe.

Early Life and Career

Sancho d'Avila was born in a city called Ávila in Spain. When he was older, he started his military career. He became the leader of the personal guards for the Duke of Alba. The Duke of Alba was a very powerful Spanish noble and military commander. While working for the Duke, Sancho d'Avila was involved in the arrest of a nobleman named the Count of Egmont.

Key Battles and Sieges

Sancho d'Avila played a big part in the Eighty Years' War. This was a long conflict between Spain and the Netherlands.

Early Battles

In 1568, d'Avila faced a defeat in the Battle of Le Quesnoy. Later, in 1572, he was part of the Siege of Middelburg. A siege is when an army surrounds a city or fort to try and take it over. The next year, he also fought in the Battle of Flushing.

Victory at Mookerheyde

In 1574, Sancho d'Avila won an important victory. He defeated Louis and Henry. These two were brothers of William the Silent, a key leader in the Dutch revolt. This battle was called the Battle of Mookerheyde.

Later Campaigns

Sancho d'Avila continued to be a significant figure in Spanish military actions.

The Sack of Antwerp

In 1576, d'Avila was in charge of Spanish troops at the Citadel of Antwerp. He was a main leader in an event known as the Sack of Antwerp. This was a very destructive event where the city suffered a lot of damage and loss.

Portuguese Campaigns

Four years later, in 1580, d'Avila joined the Duke of Alba again. They fought together in the Battle of Alcântara. This battle was part of the War of the Portuguese Succession. Sancho d'Avila then captured the important Portuguese city of Porto. This helped Spain to unite with Portugal for over 60 years. He also helped defeat the army of António, Prior of Crato, who was trying to become king of Portugal.

Death

Sancho d'Avila later died in Lisbon, Portugal. He got a wound during a military raid in Portugal, and the wound became infected.
