A Look Back at Sand Ridge's Past
Sand Ridge has an interesting history, especially with oil! In 1925, the very first oil well in Wharton County started working near a place called Iago. This discovery led to a big oil boom, meaning many more oil fields were found and used.
Old maps from 1936 show that Sand Ridge had two churches, a cemetery, and several homes. By the 1980s, the New Colorado Tabernacle Church and another church, along with more homes, were in the area.
The railroad that once ran through Sand Ridge stopped operating in 1992. After that, the train tracks were removed. In 2013, the Sandridge Baptist Church and the nearby Sand Ridge & Mt Gilead Cemetery were still important places in the community.
