History of Sandstone Township
Sandstone Township has a long history, starting almost 200 years ago.
Early Beginnings
Sandstone Township was first created in 1837. It was originally part of another area called Spring Arbor Township. The state government decided to make it its own township.
Becoming a Charter Township
In 2000, Sandstone became a "charter township." This happened because the area grew a lot with new businesses and factories. Becoming a charter township gave the local government more power to manage this growth and provide better services to its residents.
One important business that came to Sandstone was Michigan Automotive Compressors, Inc. (MACI). This company makes parts for cars and trucks. It provides many jobs for people living in the community.
Sandstone Station
Sandstone Station was once a stop for trains. It was on a railroad line that is now used by Norfolk Southern Railway and Amtrak. This line runs between the cities of Jackson and Albion. The old station building is still there, at the corner of Sandstone Road and Michigan Avenue.

Sandstone Township is located in the western part of Jackson County. It covers a total area of about 36.18 square miles. Most of this area, about 36.00 square miles, is land. A small part, about 0.18 square miles, is water.
Major Roads and Waterways
Interstate 94, a major highway, goes through the southern part of the township. You can get on or off I-94 at Exits 130 and 133. If you drive east on I-94, you will reach Jackson, which is the main city of the county, in about 7 miles. If you drive west, you will get to Battle Creek in about 33 miles.
A stream called Sandstone Creek flows through the township. It eventually flows north into the larger Grand River.
