About Sandy Creek Park

Sandy Creek Conservation Park covers an area of 1.58 square kilometers (about 0.6 square miles). This park helps protect important plants and animals. It is managed by the Department for Environment and Water.

History of the Park

The land for Sandy Creek Conservation Park first became a protected area on October 7, 1965. It was called a wildlife reserve back then. Later, in 1967, more land was added, and it became the Sandy Creek National Park.

On April 27, 1972, the park's name changed again. It became the Sandy Creek Conservation Park. This change happened under a new law called the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972. Over the years, more land has been added to the park to make it bigger.

What the Park Looks Like

The park has gently rolling sandy hills and flat areas. Small creeks flow through the landscape. The height of the land ranges from 185 meters (607 feet) to 235 meters (771 feet) above sea level.

The main trees you'll find here are Eucalyptus fasciculosa and Callitris preissii. There are also areas with Eucalyptus leucoxylon and Eucalyptus odorata. The plants growing under the trees can be different in various parts of the park. You might also see old vineyards that are no longer used.

Animals and Plants

Sandy Creek Conservation Park is home to many interesting species. One special plant found here is Lomandra multiflora. This plant is considered endangered in South Australia, meaning it's very rare. There are also three other rare plant species in the park.

You might spot a Western grey kangaroo (Macropus fuliginosus) in the park. It's a common sight. The park is also a great place for birdwatching. About 120 different kinds of birds have been seen here. This includes five types of cuckoos.

It's special because you can find birds from both sclerophyll forests and mallee areas living together. This mix of birds is important for the park's natural environment.

Park Protection Status

Sandy Creek Conservation Park is a IUCN Category III protected area. This means it is recognized internationally as a "Natural Monument or Feature." These areas are protected because they have unique natural features or important wildlife.

In 1980, the park was also listed on the Register of the National Estate. This was a list of important natural and cultural places in Australia, which is no longer used.
