How the Sangama Dynasty Began
The Sangama dynasty was founded by Harihara I and Bukka. Their father was taken prisoner in 1327 by Muhammad bin Tughluq. The brothers then founded the city of Vijayanagara in 1336. This city became the heart of their new empire.
Important Rulers and Their Achievements
After Bukka, his successor, Harihara II, became king. He continued to expand the empire across southern India. He took control of coastal areas between Nellore and Kalinga. He also conquered regions like Addanki and Srisailam. Harihara II also gained control of important Indian ports such as Goa, Chaul, and Dabhol.
After Harihara II passed away, there was a fight for the throne. Virupaksha Raya, Bukka Raya II, and Deva Raya all wanted to rule. Deva Raya eventually won and became king. During his time, Deva Raya successfully controlled a large part of the empire.
However, the kings who came after Deva Raya did not achieve much. This changed with Deva Raya II. His rule is known as the "golden age" of the Sangama Dynasty. Under Deva Raya II, the empire grew even more. They conquered Kondavidu and defeated the ruler of Quilon. The empire stretched from Odisha to Malabar. It also reached from Ceylon to Gulbarga. Many major Indian ports also came under their control.
The End of the Dynasty
Sadly, after Deva Raya II, his successors were not as strong. This led to the decline of the dynasty. The Bahamani Kingdoms began to take over much of the Vijayanagara territory. Virupaksha Raya II was the last emperor of the Sangama dynasty.
