Sanhattan is a fun nickname for a very important part of Santiago, Chile. It's like a mix of "Santiago" and "Manhattan" (a famous area in New York City). This name is used for Santiago's fancy financial district. It's located in the northeast part of the city, in the Las Condes area. You'll find it between the Mapocho River and Américo Vespucio avenue.

This area is full of tall, modern buildings. Many of them are offices, but you'll also find restaurants, hotels, shopping centers, and banks here. Sanhattan is home to two of the tallest buildings in South America. One is the Titanium La Portada, which is 55 stories high and 194 meters tall. The other is the Gran Torre Santiago, which is even taller at 300 meters and has 63 stories. This huge tower is very close by, in the Providencia area.

How Sanhattan Started

The Gran Torre Santiago (being built in 2010) and Titanium La Portada (left) are two of Sanhattan's tallest buildings.

The land where Sanhattan now stands was once called "Hacienda San Luis." A man named Ricardo Lyon bought this land in 1907. He was a farmer and also the mayor of the Providencia area.

Later, in 1937, city planners decided how the land in Las Condes would be used. An architect named Eduardo Lewellyn-Jones was asked to design a new living area for important families in Santiago. But it wasn't until the early 1990s that real estate companies started to build big projects here.

Today, Sanhattan has some of the most expensive land in all of Chile. It's a very valuable and important part of the city.

Where is Sanhattan?

According to a newspaper called La Tercera, Sanhattan has clear borders. To the north, it's bordered by Av. Presidente Riesco. To the east, it reaches the El Golf area. To the south, you'll find Av. Apoquindo and Tajamar. And to the west, it's next to the Mapocho river.

Getting Around Sanhattan

Finding a place to park your car in Sanhattan can be hard. Because of this, many people choose to travel by public transport. The city's subway, Line 1, has stations nearby. Also, the Costanera Norte Highway goes around Sanhattan, making it easy to reach by car if needed.
