Sans was an old town, or a "former settlement," located in Monterey County, California. It was a place where people used to live, but it no longer exists as a town today.
What Was Sans?
Sans was a small community that appeared on maps made by the U.S. Geological Survey as late as 1921. This means it was still recognized as a place on official maps at that time. Over the years, like many small settlements, it faded away.
Where Was Sans Located?
This former settlement was found about 9 miles (14 kilometers) northeast of a place called Cape San Martin. It was also quite high up, sitting at an elevation of about 1,316 feet (401 meters) above sea level. Being near the Nacimiento River would have been important for the people living there, providing a source of water.
Life in Sans: The Nacimiento School
Even though Sans was a small place, it was home to the Nacimiento School. Having a school shows that families with children lived there, and the community cared about education. Schools are often a central part of small towns, bringing people together.
