Sansan Chien (born July 1, 1967 – died October 24, 2011) was a talented composer. She wrote a special kind of music called contemporary classical music. This is a style of music created in recent times. Sansan Chien was very famous in Taiwan. She was known for teaching about music theory and how to compose music.

Early Life and Music Journey
Sansan Chien was born on July 1, 1967, in Changhua, Taiwan. She grew up in the Taichung area. When she was 15, her family moved to the United States. They settled in a town called Sylvania, Ohio. There, she finished her high school studies.
Learning About Music
Sansan loved music and continued her education. She earned a special degree in piano playing from The University of Toledo. This was in 1989. Then, she got a master's degree in music composition. This means she learned how to create her own music. She earned this degree from the Ohio University School of Music in 1991.
Her learning journey continued. She earned a doctor's degree in music composition. This was from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University Bloomington in 1997. While studying there, she also became a citizen of the United States. She chose to keep her Taiwanese citizenship too.
Teaching and Helping Students
After finishing her studies, Dr. Chien became a professor. From 1997 to 2011, she taught at the National Kaohsiung Normal University (NKNU). She was an assistant professor there. She taught music theory and composition.
Inspiring Young Musicians
Before NKNU, she also taught at The University of Indianapolis. She also taught at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Many students loved her teaching. She was especially popular at National Kaohsiung Normal University.
She played a big part in making the music program better at NKNU. She greatly improved how music theory and composition were taught. With her husband, Paul San Gregory, she created a great learning place. He was also a composer and professor. Many NKNU graduates learned a lot from them.
For many years, they also led the Contemporary Chamber Ensemble at NKNU. This was a special music group. It was the only university group in Taiwan that played new music at that time.
Later Years
Sansan Chien passed away on October 24, 2011. She was 44 years old. She died in Chang Geng Memorial Hospital in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. She had been sick for some time.
