History of Sansare
The name "Sansare" comes from a special tree called the sare tree. Its scientific name is Acaciella angustissima. Both the town and the valley where it is located are named after this tree.
Early Settlements and Spanish Arrival
Long before the Spanish arrived, the area around Sansare was already home to Mayan communities. These early people were connected to the ancient cultures of places like Copán and Quiriguá.
Sansare in Spanish Records
The valley of Sansare was first mentioned in Spanish records as early as 1769. This shows that it was an important place even centuries ago.
Becoming a Municipality
In 1871, when the department of Zacapa was created, Sansare was listed as one of its municipalities. Later, in 1908, Sansare was moved to the El Progreso Department, where it remains today.
