History of Sant Feliu
When Was It Built?
This church, like others nearby such as Sant Climent, Taüll and Sant Joan de Boí, was built a very long time ago. Experts believe it was constructed in the 11th century. That means it's over 900 years old!
A World Heritage Site
In November 2000, something very important happened. UNESCO, a big organization that protects special places around the world, added Sant Feliu and eight other churches from the Vall de Boí to its list of World Heritage Sites. This means they are very important historical and cultural places for everyone to enjoy and protect.
Church Architecture
How It Was Designed
Sant Feliu de Barruera was planned to look like other churches in the Vall de Boí. However, during its construction, the design changed quite a bit. So, it ended up looking a little different from its neighbors.
Inside the Church
Inside, the church has a main area called a nave. This nave has a rounded ceiling, like a barrel, and is divided into three sections. At the front, facing east, there's a semi-circular area called an apse. This is where the altar would be. The choir, where singers might stand, is marked by a special arch. Light comes into this area through three straight windows. On the north side, there's a smaller side chapel with its own semi-circular apse, which is like a smaller version of the main apse.
Outside the Church
From the outside, the main apse is decorated with special features. These include blind arcades (arches that are just for decoration and don't open) and Lombard bands (narrow, decorative strips). The smaller side chapel, however, does not have these decorations.
