Sant Feliu's Past: A Journey Through Time

Sant Feliu de Llobregat has a long and interesting history.

Early Beginnings

People lived in this area a very long time ago, even in the Stone Age. Evidence of ancient humans has been found in the Can Albareda area. There are also signs of Iberian and Roman people, for example, in the town square.

Naming the Town

In Roman times and part of the Middle Ages, the place had different names like Titian and Micano Tiano. The name Sant Feliu first appeared in the year 1002. This was in a document from the monastery of Sant Cugat del Vallès. The name came from a small chapel dedicated to Saint Feliu (which means Felix in Catalan).

The church of Sant Llorenç (Saint Lawrence) was built in 1524. It was destroyed during the Civil War but has since been rebuilt. Before this church, Sant Feliu depended on nearby towns for its religious services.

Palace and Gardens

In the 1600s, a man named Jaime Falguera built a large palace in the town. It had huge gardens that stretched all the way to the Llobregat river. This property stayed with his family, the Marquis of Castellbell, for a long time. The palace was used until the 1900s. Today, the city owns the palace and what is left of its gardens. The National Rose Show is held there every May. You can still see a carriage from the Castellbell family in the old stables.

Growth and Industry

In 1855, a railway line was built connecting Barcelona and Vilafranca. Sant Feliu got its own train station, which helped the town grow. The town market was built in 1885.

Factories started to appear early in Sant Feliu. Textile factories, which made cloth, began using steam power. Bertrand (1861) and Solà and Sert (1893) were important companies. However, the town really became industrial in the 1900s when electricity became common.

Growing roses has also been a very important business in Sant Feliu since the early 1900s.

Becoming a City

King Alfonso XIII officially made Sant Feliu a city in 1929. In 1936, it became the capital of the Baix Llobregat area.

During the Civil War, some place names with royal or religious meanings were changed. The people of Sant Feliu were called "Roses del Llobregat." This was to honor the history of rose growing in the area by families like Dot and Camprubí. Forces supporting the Nationalists took over the Barcelona area in February 1939.

Modern Times

In 1948, a group called the Falange started "San Feliu Youth Radio." Even though it had a specific origin, it became quite independent. After a short break, it reopened in 1981 as Ràdio Sant Feliu.

In 1999, a new Dot and Camprubí Rose Garden was planted. This garden celebrates the work of Pedro Dot and other Spanish rose breeders. It has 20,000 roses and over 400 different kinds!

In 2005, Pope John Paul II made Sant Feliu a bishopric. This meant the church of Sant Llorenç became a cathedral.
