Santa is a city located on the northern coast of Peru. It sits on the left bank of the Santa River, very close to the Pacific Ocean. This city is the capital of the Santa District within the Santa Province in the Ancash Region. It was originally founded with the name Santa María de la Parrilla.

History of Santa

Early Settlement and Spanish Arrival

Around the year 1527, an indigenous village called Saucha existed along the banks of the Santa River. The homes there were built using reeds.

On May 13, 1528, the Spanish explorer Francisco Pizarro arrived in the area. He left two Spaniards behind to explore the place and learn the local language from the people living there.

Founding the City

In 1531, the Spanish built a small chapel in Saucha. Later, they moved further inland to a new location, which became known as Pueblo Nuevo (New Town). This new settlement was different from the "Old Town" of Saucha.

The official founding of the Spanish city was ordered on August 2, 1556. This order came from Andrés Hurtado de Mendoza, who was a viceroy (a ruler representing the Spanish king). The city was given the full title of Santa María de la Parrilla.
