The Story of Santa Barbara

Early Days and Challenges

Santa Barbara was started by farmers in 1851. These farmers were from New Mexico. They built their homes along an old road. This road connected the Jornada del Muerto and Cooke's Wagon Road. It was also near the San Diego Crossing.

However, the farmers faced challenges. Apache groups sometimes raided their community. These raids made the farmers leave Santa Barbara.

Protection and Abandonment

In 1853, a military base was built. It was called Fort Thorn. This fort was built close by. Its purpose was to protect the area. The fort helped keep the Apache raids away.

Fort Thorn was closed in 1859. But it still served an important role. It became the office for Dr. Michael Steck. He was an agent for the Apache people.

However, new problems arose. In 1860, Navajo groups began raiding again. Because of these raids, both the agency and Santa Barbara were left empty. The community was abandoned.

Years later, in 1875, a new town was founded. This town was named Hatch. It was built right on the same spot where Santa Barbara once stood.
