A Look at Santa Cruz History
How Santa Cruz Became Part of the U.S.
Long ago, Puerto Rico was controlled by Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain and the United States signed a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this treaty, Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States. This means it is part of the U.S. but not a state.
Early Population of Santa Cruz
In 1899, the United States government counted all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census showed that the Santa Cruz barrio had 435 people living there at that time.
