Exploring the History of Santa Giusta
Santa Giusta has a very old past, reaching back thousands of years. It is believed that an ancient Phoenician port town called Othoca once existed here. The Phoenicians were a powerful trading civilization from long ago.
Discovering Ancient Othoca
Archaeologists think that parts of the ancient town of Othoca might be hidden at the bottom of a nearby lake. This lake is separated from the Mediterranean Sea by a narrow strip of land. Modern Santa Giusta is built on top of some of these very old sites.
Archaeological Finds in the Lake
During past digs, experts found 50 large clay jars called amphorae. These jars were used to store things like wine or olive oil. They also found the first chamber tomb (a special burial place) of Phoenician origin ever discovered in Italy.
Today, archaeologists from the University of Cagliari are planning to explore more of the lake. They believe there might be 100 more amphorae resting on a wooden platform, covered by thick mud. These discoveries help us learn more about the people who lived here long ago.

Santa Giusta Cathedral
The Santa Giusta Cathedral is a very old church that was once a main cathedral. Now, it is known as a minor basilica. It is a great example of Romanesque architecture, which is a style of building that was popular in Europe around the 11th and 12th centuries. This type of architecture often features thick walls, round arches, and large towers.
