Santa María de Fe is a town and district in Paraguay. It is located in the Misiones Department. This town is about 15 kilometers away from the city of San Ignacio.

History of Santa María
How the Town Started
A priest named Father Emmanuel Berthot founded Santa María de Fe. He started the town in the year 1647.
The Old Church and Its Art
The first church in Santa María was sadly destroyed by a fire. This happened in 1889. Luckily, many beautiful paintings were saved from the fire. You can still see these paintings today. They are displayed in the church and in the local museum. The museum also has many amazing Baroque paintings and wooden sculptures.
Heroes of Independence
A very important person, Rev. José Agustín Molas, was born here in 1787. He was a Catholic priest. Molas helped lead the independence revolution in Paraguay. This big event happened on May 14 and 15, 1811. People remember Molas as a hero who helped Paraguay become a free country.
A Famous Explorer's Stay
A French explorer and plant expert, Amado Aimé Bonpland, lived in Santa María for a while. He stayed here until 1829. While he was in town, he taught the local people many useful things. He showed them how to grow different plants. He also taught them how to make candies and special drinks. Bonpland married a local woman named María. She was the daughter of a cacique, which is a local chief. They had two children together.

The district of Santa María de Fe is in the Eastern Region of Paraguay. It is about 253 kilometers south of Asuncion. Asuncion is the capital city of Paraguay.

To reach Santa María, you can take National Route Number 1. Then, you take a turn off the main road. This turn is between the cities of San Ignacio and Santa Rosa.
