Santa Rosa is a town and municipality in Colombia. It is found in the Cauca region, specifically in an area called the Bota Caucana. This town is located on the eastern side of the Colombian Massif. This is a mountain area where two large mountain ranges, the Central and Oriental Cordilleras, meet.
The economy of Santa Rosa mainly relies on farming. Important crops grown here include corn, sugar cane, and plantains. Raising livestock is also a key part of their economy. The municipality includes smaller towns called corregiments: Carmelo, San Juan de Villalobos, and Descanse.
History of Santa Rosa
The town of Santa Rosa was founded several times over many years. The very first settlement was started by the Spanish crown. They asked Antonio Gonzalez to lead this, and he then gave the job to Bernardino Mujica.
On June 26, 1593, a Spanish captain named Bernardo de Vargas Machuca arrived at the settlement. It was located next to the Iscansé river. He decided to name the town Simancas, remembering his hometown in Spain. The Iscansé river he mentioned is actually the upper part of what is now known as the Caquetá river.
Around the year 1600, two local groups of people, the Andakies and Aguanungas, fought back against the settlers. They destroyed the towns of Mocoa and Simancas.
To remember the town's long history, the local community placed a special plate on the wall of the Church of Santa Rosa. It says: "ESTE LUGAR FUE SEDE DE UNA DE LAS FUNDACIONES DE SIMANCAS, ACTUALMENTE SANTAROSA: 1551, 1595,1685,1871,1907 TESTIMONIO DE ALCIDES JIMENEZ, RODRIGO BOTINA Y MARIO MEJIA - SANTA ROSA 1991"
This translates to: "This place is one of the foundational sites of Simancas, Currently Santarosa: 1551, 1595, 1685, 1871, 1907 Testimony of Alcides Jimenez, Rodrigo Botina & Mario Mejia - Santa Rosa 1991"
The most recent founding of Santa Rosa is often linked to Eduwiges Becerra and Benito Mavesoy. They are believed to have given the land for the town in 1870. Later, on August 30, 1872, a person named Leonidas Gómez changed the name from Villa or Town of Simancas to Santa Rosa. However, historians do not all agree on the exact details of these founding events. Some historians believe the land was given to the Catholic Church on July 17, 1898.
