José Santos Gutiérrez Prieto was an important Colombian leader. He was a soldier and a politician. He became the president of the state of Boyacá. Later, he was elected as the president of the United States of Colombia from 1868 to 1870.

Early Life and Education
José Santos Gutiérrez was born in El Cocuy, Boyacá, on October 24, 1820. His family moved to Bogotá so he could get a good education. He went to high school at the Colegio Mayor de San Bartolomé. After that, he studied law and became a lawyer. He passed away in Bogotá, Cundinamarca, on February 6, 1872.
Military Career
In 1851, Gutiérrez joined the military. He was very talented and quickly showed his skills.
First Battle
His first time in a real fight was in 1854. This was during a conflict against the government of General José María Melo. In this battle, he bravely saved the life of General Tomás Cipriano de Mosquera. Because of his heroic actions, he was promoted to the rank of General.
Leading Troops
Later, in 1859, General Gutiérrez led troops for General Mosquera. This was in the province of Santander (which is now the Department of Santander). They were fighting in a civil war against the government of President Mariano Ospina Rodríguez.
Battle of La Concepción
During the "Battle of La Concepción" on August 29, 1860, General Gutiérrez was injured. He was once again saving General Mosquera's life.
Political Career
After the civil war of 1859-1860, General Gutiérrez started his political journey.
Governor of States
First, he was appointed Governor of the province of Boyacá from 1861 to 1862. Later, he became the Governor of the province of Cundinamarca from 1864 to 1865.
National Politics
General Tomás Cipriano de Mosquera's army won against the main army of Colombia. After President Mariano Ospina Rodríguez's term ended, General Mosquera declared himself president on April 1, 1861. He allowed a special meeting called the Constitutional Congress, or "Convención de Rionegro" to take place. General Gutiérrez was a delegate at this important meeting.
