Geography of the Sapodilla Cayes
The Sapodilla Cayes are a group of small, sandy islands called cayes. They are part of a much larger natural wonder: the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System. This reef system is the second largest in the world!
Who Owns the Islands?
Even though Belize manages the Sapodilla Cayes, some other countries also claim them.
- Guatemala believes the border in the sea should be to the northwest of the islands.
- Honduras also mentioned a claim to the Sapodilla Cayes in its 1982 constitution.
Sapodilla Cayes Marine Reserve
The Sapodilla Cayes Marine Reserve is a special protected area in the sea around these islands. It was created in 1996 to help protect the amazing ocean life and coral reefs found there. The Fisheries Department of Belize is in charge of looking after this reserve.
This reserve helps to keep the ocean healthy for many different animals. It is important for protecting the beautiful coral reefs and the fish, turtles, and other creatures that live there.
