Toledo District is the southernmost part of Belize, a country in Central America. Its capital is Punta Gorda. This district is known for its amazing natural beauty, including clean rainforests, cool caves, and beautiful islands called cays along the coast. It's also a place where many different cultures live together. In 2010, about 30,538 people lived here.
People and Cultures
Toledo District is home to a wide range of cultures. You can find Mopan and Kekchi Maya people here. There are also Creole and Garifuna communities. Other groups include East Indians, Mennonites, and Mestizos. Even descendants of US Confederate settlers live in this diverse district.
Farming and Chocolate
The economy of Toledo District mostly relies on agriculture. This means people grow a lot of crops. Some common crops include beans, corn, and rice.
A very special crop grown here is cacao. Cacao beans are used to make chocolate! The cacao from Toledo is famous for being used in a special kind of chocolate called Maya Gold. Every year in May, the district celebrates its long history with chocolate. This celebration shows how important chocolate is to both the ancient and modern people of Toledo.
Nature and Landscape
Toledo District has some of the most untouched and clean rainforests in Belize. These forests are full of amazing plants and animals. The district also has many caves that are fun to explore. Along the coast, you'll find flat areas called coastal lowland plains. Just offshore, there are small, sandy islands known as cays. These natural features make Toledo a unique and beautiful place to visit.
