Sara Topelson's family came from Poland and Russia. After moving to Mexico, she studied architecture at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), which is a very big university. She also learned about how buildings are designed and the history of art.

Building a Career

With her husband, José Grinberg, Sara started their own architecture company called Grinberg & Topelson Arquitectos. Together, they designed many different kinds of buildings. These included homes, schools, factories, shops, and even places for people to have fun.

Sara also loved teaching. She was a professor of art history at the Universidad Anáhuac and taught about planning cities. She even taught at the International Academy of Architecture (IAA), sharing her knowledge with students from all over the world.

Leading the Way in Architecture

Sara Topelson became a leader in the architecture community. Since 1982, she helped with international matters for the Federation of National Colleges of Architects of Mexico. She also joined the council of the Union Internationale des Architectes (UIA) in 1990. This is a very important global group for architects.

From 1993 to 1999, she served as vice-president and then president of the UIA. This was a huge achievement because she was the first woman to ever be president of this international organization! In May 1998, she was even honored in France and became a knight of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
