Sarah Coysh (born around 1742, died 1801) was an important woman in English history. She inherited a lot of land and money from her family. When she married John Rolls (1735–1801), her wealth helped his family, the famous Rolls family, become even more powerful. This story shows how families grew their wealth and social standing in England and Wales during the 1700s and 1800s.
The Story of Sarah Coysh and the Rolls Family
Sarah Coysh was born around 1742. She was the only child who would inherit everything from three important families: the Coysh, Allen, and James families. This made her an "heiress," meaning she would get all their property and money. Her marriage to John Rolls was very important. It brought her family's large estates and wealth into the Rolls family. This was a common way for families to grow their power and influence in the 1700s.
How the Rolls Family Grew Stronger
Sarah's son, also named John Rolls of The Hendre, continued to build on this success. He made The Hendre estate in Llangattock-Vibon-Avel, Monmouthshire, Wales, his main home. Around 1830, he started making the mansion much bigger. This was the first of many times the house would be expanded.
A Baron and a Royal Visit
By 1892, after two more expansions of the mansion, Sarah's grandson, John A Rolls, became a Baron. This meant he was given the title of Baron Llangattock of The Hendre, which was a very high social honor.
Around 1900, after the mansion was made even bigger for a fourth time, the family received a special visit. The future King George V and Queen Mary visited The Hendre. At the time, they were known as the Duke and Duchess of York. During their visit, they even rode in an automobile. This car belonged to Lord Llangattock's son, Charles Stewart Rolls. Charles Stewart Rolls later became famous as a pioneer in aviation and helped start the well-known company, Rolls-Royce.
