Sarah Catharine Paulson (born December 17, 1974) is a talented American actress. She has won many important awards, including a Primetime Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Tony Award. In 2017, Time magazine recognized her as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
Sarah Paulson started her acting career in TV shows like American Gothic (1995–1996) and Jack & Jill (1999–2001). She became very well-known for working with producer Ryan Murphy. She starred in nine seasons of his popular show American Horror Story from 2011 to 2021.
She won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her role as Marcia Clark in the TV series The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story (2016). Early Life and School
Sarah Catharine Paulson was born in Tampa, Florida, on December 17, 1974. Her parents are Catharine Gordon and Douglas Lyle Paulson II. When she was five, her parents divorced. Sarah then moved with her mother and sister to Maine, and later to New York City.
Her mother worked as a waitress, and they lived in different parts of New York City, including Queens and Gramercy Park, before settling in Park Slope. Sarah remembers that her mom was only 27 when they moved and didn't know anyone in New York. She got a job at Sardi's Restaurant. During her childhood, Sarah spent her summers in Florida with her father.
She went to P.S. 29 and Berkeley Carroll School in Brooklyn. Later, she attended Manhattan's Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, which are both schools for performing arts.
Acting Career
Starting Her Acting Journey

Sarah Paulson started acting right after high school. In 1994, she made her Broadway debut in the play The Sisters Rosensweig. She also appeared in a play called Talking Pictures and an episode of the TV show Law & Order that same year.
In 1995, Paulson starred in the TV film Friends at Last and the TV series American Gothic. In 1997, she made her first movie appearance in the thriller Levitation. She also appeared in the TV series Cracker. The next year, she acted in the play Killer Joe.
She then played Elisa Cronkite in Jack & Jill (1999). That same year, she was in the movie The Other Sister and had a supporting role in the comedy Held Up. In 2000, she had a small role in the romantic comedy What Women Want. She played Luci Baines Johnson in the HBO film Path to War (2002). She also starred in the NBC series Leap of Faith (2002).
Paulson was cast in the romantic comedy Down with Love (2003). She had a small role in the HBO series Deadwood (2005) and appeared in an episode of Nip/Tuck in 2004. In 2005, Paulson starred in a Broadway play called The Glass Menagerie. She also had a small role in the science fiction film Serenity. In 2009, Paulson starred in the TV series Cupid on ABC. In 2010, she appeared in an episode of Grey's Anatomy. She then played Nicolle Wallace in the HBO film Game Change (2012), which was about the 2008 U.S. presidential election. For this role, she was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award.
In 2010, she starred in the play Collected Stories on Broadway. That same year, Paulson filmed the movie Martha Marcy May Marlene, where she played the sister of a woman who escaped a cult. The film was released in 2011. At the same time, Paulson appeared in three episodes of the FX show American Horror Story, playing a character named Billie Dean Howard.
Paulson returned for the second season of American Horror Story, called American Horror Story: Asylum, where she played a new character, Lana Winters. In 2013, Paulson acted in the play Talley's Folly. She then starred in the third season of American Horror Story, titled Coven, as Cordelia Foxx, a witch. The same year, she played Mary Epps, a slave-owner, in the historical drama film 12 Years a Slave. This film was very successful, and Paulson was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture with the rest of the cast.
In 2014, Paulson appeared in the fourth season of American Horror Story, called Freak Show, playing conjoined twin sisters Bette and Dot Tattler. She returned for the fifth season, Hotel, as Hypodermic Sally, a ghost. She received Emmy nominations for her roles in Freak Show and Hotel. She also played Abby Gerhard in the romantic drama Carol (2015).

In 2016, Paulson starred in the first season of the true crime series American Crime Story, called The People v. O.J. Simpson. She played prosecutor Marcia Clark. Her performance was highly praised, and she won many awards, including a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a Golden Globe Award. That same year, she starred in the romantic drama Blue Jay (2016).
In 2016, she starred in the sixth season of American Horror Story, Roanoke, playing two characters: Audrey Tindall and Shelby Miller. She also returned as Lana Winters in the final episode. After Roanoke, Paulson appeared in the seventh season, Cult (2017), playing Ally Mayfair-Richards. She also played Geraldine Page in an episode of the series Feud (2017).
Paulson was then cast in the heist film Ocean's 8 (2018), which was a big success at the box office. In 2017, she was invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In 2019, Paulson starred in the superhero thriller Glass, the drama The Goldfinch, and the animated film Abominable. Paulson then starred as Alice Macray in the drama series Mrs. America (2020), which was about the movement to pass the Equal Rights Amendment. In September 2017, it was announced that Paulson would star as a younger version of Nurse Mildred Ratched, a famous villain from the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, in the Netflix series Ratched. The first season was released in September 2020. For her performance, she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Drama. In November 2020, Paulson starred in the psychological thriller film Run, which became a very popular original film on Hulu.
In 2021, she played Linda Tripp in the third season of American Crime Story, called Impeachment. For this role, Paulson received another Primetime Emmy Award nomination. In 2021, she returned to American Horror Story for its tenth season. She played Tuberculosis Karen and a fictional version of former First Lady of the United States, Mamie Eisenhower.
In 2022, it was announced that Paulson would play author Glennon Doyle in a TV series based on Doyle's book, Untamed. In 2023, she appeared as a guest star in the Hulu comedy-drama series The Bear. Paulson returned to Broadway in 2023 to star in the play Appropriate. In the play, she plays Toni, an older sister trying to reconnect with her siblings after their father's death. She won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for this role.

Sarah Paulson lives in Los Angeles. She supports the Democratic Party. When she was 25, she was diagnosed with melanoma on her back, but it was removed before it could spread.
