Early Life and Family
Luci Baines Johnson was born in Washington, D.C. She has an older sister named Lynda Bird. Interestingly, Luci's first name was originally spelled "Lucy." She changed it in her teenage years. Her parents, Lyndon B. Johnson and Lady Bird Johnson, both had the initials LBJ, so they gave their daughters names that also started with L and B.
Luci was raised in the Episcopal faith, like her mother. When she was 18, she became a Roman Catholic.
A Teenager in the White House
Luci was just 16 years old when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963. She was in a Spanish class when she heard the news. Soon after, Secret Service agents arrived at her school, and she realized her father had become the 36th President of the United States.
She later attended Georgetown University School of Nursing and Health Studies. However, she left in 1966 because the school did not allow married students, and she got married that year. In 1966, she also learned to cook from Zephyr Wright, who was the White House chef for her family.
Career and Contributions
Since 1993, Luci Baines Johnson has been a successful businesswoman. She is the chairman of the board for LBJ Asset Management Partners, a company that manages family investments. She also co-founded BusinesSuites in 1989, a company that provides office spaces, and serves as its chairman. In 1997, she earned a degree in Communication from St. Edward's University.
Luci is also very involved in helping her community. She serves on the board of directors for the LBJ Foundation, which supports her father's presidential library and legacy. She has helped raise money for important causes like The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center and the American Heart Association. She has also been a trustee for Boston University and advised a center that helps women.
In 2018, she attended the state funeral of President George H. W. Bush with her husband, Ian Turpin, and her sister, Lynda Bird Johnson Robb.
Personal Life
Marriage and Children

On August 6, 1966, Luci married Patrick John Nugent. Their wedding was a big event, held at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. About 700 guests attended, and the wedding was even shown on television, with 55 million people watching! It was also featured on the cover of Life magazine.
Luci and Patrick had four children: Patrick Lyndon (born 1967), Nicole Marie (born 1970), Rebekah Johnson (born 1974), and Claudia Taylor Nugent (born 1976). Their marriage later ended in 1979.
On March 3, 1984, Luci married Ian J. Turpin, a Scottish-born Canadian businessman. He is now the president of LBJ Asset Management Partners, located at the LBJ Ranch. Through this marriage, she also gained a stepson.
Health Journey
In April 2010, Luci Baines Johnson was diagnosed with Guillain–Barré syndrome, which is an autoimmune disorder that affects the body's nerves. She received treatment at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Her doctor said her case was not as severe as some, and she made a full recovery.
