Holland Taylor (born January 14, 1943) is an American actress. She is well-known for her many roles in television and movies. She won an Emmy Award for her role as Judge Roberta Kittleson on The Practice. She was also nominated for four Emmys for playing Evelyn Harper on Two and a Half Men.
Taylor has starred in many TV shows. These include Bosom Buddies, The Powers That Be, and The Naked Truth. She also appeared on All My Children and The L Word. In 2017, she played Alice Lewis in the series Good Behavior.
In 2020, she received another Emmy nomination. This was for her role as Ellen Kincaid in the Netflix miniseries Hollywood.
Taylor has also been in many popular movies. Some of these are Romancing the Stone, George of the Jungle, The Truman Show, and Legally Blonde. She also appeared in Bill & Ted Face the Music.
Taylor wrote and starred in a play called Ann. This play was about the life of Ann Richards, a former Texas Governor. For this role, she was nominated for a Tony Award.

Early Life and Education
Holland Taylor was born in 1943 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her mother, Virginia, was a painter. Her father, C. Tracy Taylor, was a lawyer. Holland is the youngest of three daughters. Her sisters are Patricia and Pamela. Through Pamela, she is the aunt of director Brad Anderson.
She went to high school at Westtown School. This was a Quaker boarding school. She graduated in 1960. After that, she studied theater at Bennington College. She graduated in 1964. Then, she moved to New York City to become an actress.
Her Acting Career
Taylor started her career in theater. She performed in many plays on Broadway and off-Broadway in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. She was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for her role in The Cocktail Hour. A theater critic once called her "one of the few utterly graceful, attractive, elegant and technically accomplished actresses in our theatre."
She also took on a role in the soap opera The Edge of Night. Her acting coach, Stella Adler, encouraged her to take a role that made her famous. This was playing Tom Hanks' demanding boss in the 1980s sitcom Bosom Buddies.
Taylor showed she was good at both comedy and drama. In 1985, she starred in the ABC detective series Me and Mom. Later, she played a U.S. senator's wife in The Powers That Be.
In 1994, she joined Saved by the Bell: The College Years as Dean Susan McMann. After that, she played a newspaper editor, Camilla Dane, on The Naked Truth.
Famous TV Roles
Taylor played Judge Roberta Kittleson on The Practice. This role was only supposed to be for one episode. But it became a long-running part from 1998 to 2003. She won an Emmy Award for this role in 1999. In her speech, she thanked the show's creator for showing "a woman who puts a flag on the moon for women over 40."
She was also nominated for an Emmy for her role on The Lot. Since 2003, she has been nominated five more times. Four nominations were for her role as Evelyn Harper on Two and a Half Men. She played the snobby, overbearing mother of Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer's characters. One nomination was for her role as Ellen Kincaid in Hollywood. Taylor has also appeared on ER, Veronica's Closet, Ally McBeal, and Monk. She also played the rich Peggy Peabody on The L Word.
Movie Appearances
Taylor has been in many movies. She played a tough law professor in Legally Blonde. She was also Tina Fey's character's mother in Baby Mama. Other movies include The Truman Show, George of the Jungle, and The Wedding Date.
She has also done voice work for animated films. She voiced Prudence in Disney's Cinderella II and Cinderella III: A Twist in Time. She also voiced Francine's biological mother in American Dad!.
On Stage
In 2009, Taylor began researching and writing a play about Governor Ann Richards. The play, first called Money, Marbles, and Chalk, opened in Chicago in 2011. It then played at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The show opened on Broadway in 2013. For her performance, Taylor was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Lead Actress in a Play. The play, now simply called Ann, was broadcast on PBS in 2020.
Community Involvement
Holland Taylor has supported Aid for AIDS in Los Angeles. She is on their Honorary Board. She also takes part in their biggest yearly fundraiser, Best in Drag Show. She helps with other fundraising efforts too.
