Where is Sarandí Grande?
Sarandí Grande is found right where two important roads meet: Route 5 and Route 42. It's about 140 kilometers (about 87 miles) away from Montevideo, which is the capital city of Uruguay.
The city is also about 43 kilometers (about 27 miles) north of Florida. Florida is the main city of the department where Sarandí Grande is located. It's also about 43 kilometers (about 27 miles) south of Durazno, which is the main city of the Durazno Department.
A Look at Sarandí Grande's History
The idea to create a village in this area was first approved a long time ago, on July 6, 1853. It was approved again on July 22, 1861. The village was officially started in October 1874, near the railway station.
On June 13, 1906, it was officially recognized as a "Pueblo," which means a village. At that time, it was the main center for the "Estación Sarandí" judicial area. Later, on October 15, 1923, its name was changed to "Sarandí," and its status was upgraded to "Villa," meaning a town.
Finally, on July 1, 1956, it was renamed "Sarandí Grande." Its status was then raised to "Ciudad," which means it became a city!
