A Look at Florida's History

Florida was founded on April 24, 1809. It was named after the Count of Floridablanca. He was an important prime minister for the Spanish king.

Even before Uruguay became an independent country, Florida was known as a "Villa" (town). On July 10, 1856, it officially became the capital city of its department. Later, on April 19, 1894, its status was raised to a "Ciudad" (city).

Florida is famous for a special place called Piedra Alta de la Florida. This is where Uruguay's Declaration of Independence was signed in 1825.

The city is also known for San Cono's chapel. Many people gather there every year on June 3rd.

An important building in Florida is the Cathedral of Florida. This cathedral is also known as the National Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Thirty-Three.
