Sarare is a town located in the Venezuelan state of Lara. It is the main town of the Simón Planas Municipality. Around 12,535 people live in Sarare and its surrounding areas. The town sits by the Sarare River, which eventually flows into the large Orinoco River.
What is the History of Sarare?
Sarare has an interesting history with two main founding moments.
Early Beginnings in 1716
A friar named Pedro de Alcalá first founded Sarare in 1716. It was set up as a missionary town for local Indigenous people. The first group of settlers included 73 families from the Atures tribe. Other Indigenous groups also lived there, such as the Cherrecheres, Guamonteyes, Guamos, Colorados, Achaguas, Guáricos, Gayones, and Otomaco and Taparita peoples. Sadly, a year after the town was founded, many settlers died because of a widespread sickness.
Re-founding in 1754
Later, in 1754, another friar named Diego de Urbique re-founded Sarare. He called it the Mission of Saint Nicolas of Sarare. This new beginning helped the town grow and develop over time.
