Saraswati Dey-Saha, born on November 23, 1979, is a former Indian track and field athlete. She was a very fast runner, known as a sprinter, from Chittamara, Tripura. Saraswati is famous for holding the Indian national record in the 200 metres race. She ran this distance in an amazing 22.82 seconds.
She set this record at a competition in Ludhiana on August 28, 2002. By doing so, Saraswati became the first Indian woman ever to run the 200 metres in less than 23 seconds! One of the biggest achievements in her career was winning a gold medal at the 2002 Asian Games in Busan.
Saraswati also represented India in relay races. In 1998, she was part of the 4 x 100 metres relay team that won a gold medal at the Asian Championships in Athletics. Her team, which included P. T. Usha, E. B. Shyla, and Rachita Mistry, also set a national record of 44.43 seconds. Later, at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, she competed in the 4 x 100 metres relay with V. Jayalakshmi, Vinita Tripathi, and Rachita Mistry.
In 2002, Saraswati received the Arjuna Award. This is a special award given by the Indian government to recognize outstanding achievements in sports. She stopped competing in athletics in July 2006 because of an injury to her Achilles tendon, which is a strong cord at the back of your ankle. This injury happened after the 2002 Busan Asian Games.
