Sarat Pujari (born August 8, 1934 – died May 12, 2014) was a famous Indian actor, director, and producer. He worked in the Odia film industry, which is also known as Ollywood. Sarat Pujari was originally from Jhaduapada, a place in Sambalpur, India.

Early Life and Education

Sarat Pujari was born on August 8, 1934, in Khandapada, Nayagarh district, Odisha. He went to many different schools across Odisha for his early education. He later earned a post-graduate degree in Economics and a Diploma in Paintings from Allahabad University in 1956.

Career Journey

After finishing his studies, Sarat Pujari began his career as a block designer and a publicity agent. In 1959, he started working as an Economics lecturer at Panchayat College, Bargarh, but he left this job in 1966. He then became a Works Manager at Tapang Light Foundry in Nayagarh. For many years, he also served as the Principal of Larambha College in Larambha.

Becoming a Film Star

Sarat Pujari started acting in movies in the 1960s. He loved drama and performing arts even when he was a student. The Oriya film industry was quite small back then, making only about one movie each year.

He decided to leave his job to focus on learning about filmmaking from September 1966 to September 1968. After this, at just 34 years old, he became the principal of Larambha College in Bargarh.

The Government of Odisha chose him to be a member of the Orissa Sangeeta Natak Academy and a member of the Board of Directors for the Film Development Corporation of Odisha in Cuttack. He later retired as the principal of Sangeet Nataka College in Bhubaneswar.

Pujari was offered a role in the film Laxmi Puja. He soon became a big star in the Oriya film industry. He acted in about 40 movies and also appeared in some television shows. He even directed a few Oriya films, including Tapoi and Ashanta Graha. In 1989, he played a villain in the international award-winning movie called Bhukha.

Awards and Recognition

Sarat Pujari received many honors for his great work in the Oriya film industry.

  • In 1985, the Government of Odisha gave him the "Jayadev Award."
  • He also received the first Hemant Das Kala Samman Award.
  • He was honored with the Kadambini Samman Awards in 2010.
  • In 2007, he received the Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Award.
  • In 2012, he was given the Orissa Cine Artist Association Award.

Personal Life and Legacy

Sarat Pujari passed away on May 12, 2014, at his home in Bhubaneshwar. He had a heart attack around 12:30 AM. He is remembered by his wife, two daughters, and two sons. His son, Soumen Pujari, is also an actor, continuing his father's legacy in the film industry.
