Saratoga, also known as the General Daniel Morgan House, is a very old and important house near Boyce, Virginia. It was built in 1779 by Daniel Morgan. He was a brave general in the Continental Army, which was America's army during the American Revolutionary War.
General Morgan is famous for winning a big battle against the British. This was the Battle of Cowpens in 1781. He named his home "Saratoga" to remember another important American victory. This was the Battles of Saratoga in 1777, where he also fought.
Saratoga was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. It was then named a National Historic Landmark in 1973. This means it's a very special place in American history. The house is privately owned and not open to visitors.

Exploring Saratoga: A Historic Home
Saratoga is a large property with more than 250 acres (100 ha) of land. It is located just south of Boyce, Virginia. The main house is made of strong limestone. It has two and a half stories with a pointed roof. There are chimneys on each end of the house.
The front of the house has five sections. The main door is in the middle. It has a wide, gabled porch over it. Above the door, there is a round-shaped window. The other windows are regular sliding windows. A wooden part was added to the left side of the house later.
General Daniel Morgan's Legacy
General Daniel Morgan built this house in 1779. He had left the Continental Army that year because he was sick. But he was called back to serve as a brigadier general. This is a high rank in the army. He then led his troops to a huge victory at the 1781 Battle of Cowpens. This battle was a turning point in the war.
Saratoga is one of the biggest and best-kept homes from that time. It shows what important houses looked like in the Shenandoah Valley. After General Morgan passed away, his daughter sold the house. It was bought by the Burwell family. For the last 100 years, it has been owned by the family of Robert Powel Page.
Writers at Saratoga
Interestingly, the house was also home to some famous writers. John Esten Cooke and his brother Philip Pendleton Cooke lived there at different times. They were both well-known for their writing.
