Hotel Saravana Bhavan is a very popular chain of restaurants. It serves delicious South Indian food. The first restaurant opened in 1981 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Today, this restaurant chain has grown a lot. It has 33 locations in India. Plus, it has over 92 restaurants in 28 different countries! You can find them in places like North America, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and Oceania.
How Saravana Bhavan Started
The story of Saravana Bhavan began in 1968. A man named P. Rajagopal opened a small grocery shop. It was in a place called KK Nagar, near Chennai. Later, in 1981, he decided to open his very first restaurant. At first, the restaurant didn't make much money. But soon, it became super popular and started doing very well!
In 1992, Rajagopal visited Singapore. He saw how big fast-food places like McDonald's worked. He learned from them. He used their ideas to help his own restaurant chain grow even bigger.
Growing Around the World
By the 1990s, Saravana Bhavan had many restaurants. Most of them were in Chennai. Then, in 2000, they opened their first restaurant outside India. This was in Dubai. Many people from India live in Dubai. So, it was a great place to open a new branch.
Today, many Saravana Bhavan restaurants outside India are run by other people. This is called franchising. Even though people from all over the world enjoy the food, the restaurants mostly serve people from South Asia who live away from home. These restaurants are like a "taste of home" for them. To help with costs, Saravana Bhavan sometimes sends workers from India to work in their restaurants in other countries.
