The Sarayu River is an important river in India. It flows through the Indian states of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. This river has a very old history. It is mentioned in ancient Indian texts like the Vedas and the Ramayana.

The Sarayu River starts when two other rivers meet. These are the Karnali (also called Ghaghara) and the Mahakali (or Sharda). They join together in Bahraich District. The Mahakali or Sharda River also marks the western border between India and Nepal. The famous city of Ayodhya is located right on the banks of the Sarayu River. Some maps show the Sarayu as just a part of the lower Ghaghara River.

The Sarayu River's Journey

The Sarayu River begins high up in the Himalayas mountains. It flows for about 350 kilometers (217 miles). Its waters eventually join the mighty Ganges River. The area where the Sarayu River flows is known as the Eastern Kumaon region in India and Western Nepal.

Cultural Importance of Sarayu

The Sarayu River is very special to many people in India. It is considered a holy river. Its mention in ancient stories like the Ramayana makes it important for religious reasons.

Festivals and Traditions

Every year, during the festival of Ram Navami, thousands of people visit Ayodhya. Ram Navami celebrates the birthday of Lord Rama. On this day, many people take a holy dip in the Sarayu River. They believe this dip can wash away sins and bring good fortune. This tradition shows how deeply connected the river is to the culture and beliefs of the region.
