The name "Sarburma" comes from the Crimean Tatar language. Sarmaq means "to wrap," and burmaq means "to curl." The Lipka Tatar name, Pierekaczewnik, comes from a Russian word meaning "to roll up."

In Poland, it is a special dish of the Lipka Tatars. It is even officially recognized in the European Union and the United Kingdom. There, it is called Pierekaczewnik and has a special status as a "Traditional Speciality Guaranteed." This means it is made in a traditional way.
