History of Saria Island
In ancient times, a city-state named Saros existed on the island. A city-state was like a small country with its own government. Saros was also part of the Delian League. This was a group of Greek city-states that worked together.
Even though only a few shepherds live on Saria today, you can still find old ruins. These are the remains of an ancient city called Nisyros.
The Name of Saria
The exact meaning of the name Saria is not fully known. However, some experts believe it is linked to an ancient Greek princess. Her name was Katherine, and she came from a royal family on Saria.
Greek legends say that Princess Katherine was as beautiful as Helen of Troy. Because of her beauty, an island was named after her. Historical records show that a kingdom called Mikri Nisyros once existed on Saria Island.
Nature and Wildlife
Saria Island does not have much plant or animal life. It has many steep cliffs. However, it is an important place for certain birds.
Eleonora's Falcon Reproduction
Saria is a special breeding area for Eleonora's falcons. These birds are known for their amazing hunting skills. They often catch other birds in mid-air.
Administration and Population
Saria Island is managed as part of the municipal unit of Olympos. This is a larger administrative area.
According to a count in 2011, only 45 people lived on Saria. Most of these residents are shepherds.
