Saspamco is a small community in Wilson County, Texas, in the United States. It is not an official city but a local area. You can find it about 11 miles northwest of Floresville. In the year 2000, about 443 people lived there.

The name Saspamco comes from the San Antonio Sewer Pipe Manufacturing Company. This company started in 1901. They used the red clay found in the area to make pipes and tiles. Saspamco is also part of the larger San Antonio metropolitan area.

History of Saspamco

Early Days and Growth

Saspamco began to grow around 1901. This was when a post office opened in the area. A special loading spot for the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway also started. This helped the pipe company move its products.

By 1915, Saspamco had about 125 residents. The community also had two churches. One was Catholic, and the other was Baptist. The town was busiest in the 1930s. At that time, the Saspamco pipe plant could make 120 tons of sewer pipe every day!

School and Changes

In 1917, the State of Texas helped the Saspamco Independent School District. They gave money for the school to buy land. This helped the school system grow.

However, by the 1960s, many businesses in Saspamco closed. The pipe company kept working for some more years. But clay pipes were not as popular anymore. New pipes made of steel and later PVC plastic were lighter and stronger. This meant less demand for the heavy clay pipes.

In the mid-1980s, Tyson Foods opened a large chicken hatchery nearby. This plant helped the local economy. But it only stayed open for about 10 years. Then, the facility moved to a different location.

The Quarry and Environment

From the late 1960s to the early 1980s, an old quarry in Saspamco was used. This quarry was left over from the brick-making plant. A private owner used it as a place to dump waste. Garbage companies paid a small fee to leave their trash there.

In the 1980s, the state environmental agency stepped in. They closed the site as a landfill. This was because it did not have the right permits. It also lacked proper drainage systems. After the closure, the animal populations in the area returned to normal levels.

Geography of Saspamco

Saspamco's soil is mostly sandy loam. This information comes from the United States Department of Agriculture. Sandy loam soil is good for farming.
