Satabdi Roy (born 5 October 1969) is a well-known Indian actress, film director, and politician. She is famous for her acting in Bengali films. She has won the BFJA Awards twice for her acting.
During the late 1980s and 1990s, Satabdi Roy was a very popular actress in Bengali commercial movies. She also directs films, though some critics have not always liked her directing style. Since 2009, she has been a Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha for the All India Trinamool Congress party.
Roy started her film career in 1986 with the Bengali film Atanka. She starred opposite Prosenjit Chatterjee in this movie. Her role in Atanka earned her the BFJA Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1987. She became a big star after acting with Tapas Paul in many films like Amar Bandhan (1986) and Guru Dakshina (1987). She also had many hit films with Prosenjit Chatterjee, including Lathi (1996) and Ranokhetro (1998).
She also acted in Bollywood (Hindi films), making her debut in Naya Zaher (1991). In 2005, she won her second BFJA Award for her role in the film Debipaksha. Satabdi Roy also started directing films, with her first movie being Abhinetri (2006).

Early Life and Education
Satabdi Roy was born in Agarpara to her parents, Shailen and Nilima Roy. She finished her Madhyamik (a type of high school exam) in 1986 from Sorojini High School. After that, she went to Jogamaya Devi College, which is connected to the University of Calcutta.
Acting Career Highlights
Starting Out (1986–1989)
Satabdi Roy's first film was Atanka in 1986, where she acted with Prosenjit Chatterjee. This film was directed by Tapan Sinha and helped her win an award for Best Supporting Actress in 1987. Before Atanka, she had worked on a film called Tina, but it was never released. She became very famous after starring with Tapas Paul in Amar Bandhan (1986).
In 1987, she had five films released. One of them, Guru Dakshina, was a huge success at the box office. She often acted with Tapas Paul in these early films. Her acting with Tapas Paul in Antaranga (1988) and Parashmani (1988) also led to big box office hits.
Becoming a Star (1990–2001)
By 1990, Satabdi Roy was a very reliable film star. Her films Apan Amar Apan and Abishkar were both big hits. In Abishkar, she played a singer looking for her kidnapped sister-in-law. She also starred in Alingan (1990). She continued to have many successful films, including Prem Pujari (1991), Adhikar (1992), and Shraddhanjali (1993).
In 1991, she made her first Bollywood film, Naya Zaher. In 1992, she was asked to be in the film Shraddhanjali (1993). She was not sure at first because she would be sharing the screen with another popular actress, Debashree Roy. However, Prosenjit Chatterjee, who was also in the film, helped them work together.
In the late 1990s, Satabdi Roy was often compared to Rituparna Sengupta. They were both offered many lead roles opposite Prosenjit Chatterjee. Satabdi Roy continued to star in many successful Bengali films with Chatterjee, such as Lathi (1996), Sakhi Tumi Kar (1996), and Sajoni Aamar Sohag (2000).
Later Roles (2003–Present)
After she got married, her film career changed a bit. In 2003, she acted in Sukh Dukkher Sansar, which was a financial success. In 2004, she played a sad widow in the film Debipaksha. Even though this film did not do well at the box office, she won another BFJA Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2005 for her performance.
In 2016, she performed in Teesta, a play based on Bratya Basu's work. She also played a villain, Dr. Jerina, in the film Bizli (2018). Her acting in this film was praised by critics. She is also set to appear in an upcoming Hindi film called The Jangipur Trial.
Career as a Filmmaker
Satabdi Roy has also directed several films. In 2011, there was some discussion about her film Paribartan, which was later released in 2017.
She directed Om Shanti (2012), starring Rituparna Sengupta and Tapas Paul. She also included a special dance number with Rakhi Sawant in the film. Om Shanti received negative reviews and was not a financial success.
Politics
Satabdi Roy became a Member of Parliament in 2009. She won the Lok Sabha election as a candidate for the Trinamool Congress party from the Birbhum area in West Bengal. She has continued to win elections from the same area for the Trinamool Congress in 2014, 2019, and 2024.
Personal Life
When Satabdi Roy is not working on films or politics, she teaches acting at the Satabdi Foundation. She also spends time with her family: her husband Mrigank Banerjee, her son Samyoraj Banerjee (Tozo), and her daughter Samiyana Banerjee (Zumi). Mrigank Banerjee is an Executive Manager at the Satabdi Roy Foundation.
