Sauvo (pronounced SAH-oo-voh) is a small town, also called a municipality (a local government area), in Finland. It is located in the beautiful Southwest Finland region. Sauvo is known for its peaceful nature and many summer homes.

As of 31 December 2023, about 2,974 people live in Sauvo. The area of Sauvo is 299.47 square kilometres (115.63 sq mi). A small part of this area, 47.21 km2 (18.23 sq mi), is water. This means that for every square kilometer, there are about 11.77 inhabitants per square kilometre (30.5/sq mi) people.

Many people have summer cottages (vacation homes) in Sauvo. This is because it is close to bigger cities and has many lovely waterside areas. During the summer, the number of people in Sauvo almost doubles! Even though these vacationers are not counted in the official population numbers, they bring a lot of life to the area.

Sauvo is also home to an old stone church built in the late 1400s. You can also find many beautiful manor houses (large, old country houses) there. The main language spoken in Sauvo is Finnish.

Sauvo's Past

Sauvo has a long and interesting history.

  • Ancient Times: Archaeologists have found many items from the Iron Age in Sauvo. The Iron Age was a time long ago when people started using iron to make tools and weapons.
  • First Records: The first time Sauvo was mentioned in writing was in the year 1335. This shows how old the area is!
  • Merging with Karuna: In 1969, a nearby municipality called Karuna joined with Sauvo. This means that Karuna became part of Sauvo, making Sauvo a bit bigger.
