How Savills Started
The company was started by a person named Alfred Savill in 1855. He began his business in London. When Alfred Savill passed away in 1905, his sons, Alfred, Edwin, and Norman, continued the business together.
In the 1920s, the company moved its offices to a new location called Lincoln's Inn Fields. During the Second World War, Norman Savill moved to Wimborne in Dorset. He took important company records with him to keep them safe. The other partners stayed in London.
Growing and Changing
By the 1970s, the company changed its name to simply Savills. In 1987, it became a limited company. This meant it was set up in a way that protects its owners. A year later, in 1988, Savills was listed on the London Stock Exchange. This allowed people to buy and sell parts of the company.
Expanding Around the World
Savills grew a lot by joining with other companies.
- In 1997, Savills joined with First Pacific Davies in Asia.
- In 1998, it bought parts of other property companies in Germany, France, and Spain.
- In June 2015, Savills bought Smiths Gore. This company helped with properties in the countryside and homes in the UK.
- In June 2016, Savills invested in Yopa Property. This was an online company that helped people buy and sell homes in the UK.
Savills continued to expand in 2016 by buying GBR Phoenix Beard. This company gave advice about business properties in the UK. In July 2017, Savills bought Larry Smith Italia, a company that managed and leased business properties in Italy. The company's growth in Europe continued in December 2017. Savills bought Aguirre Newman S.A., a top property advisory company in Spain and Portugal. The two companies then became known as Savills Aguirre Newman in January 2018.
