History of Sawmills
The community of Sawmills started in the late 1800s. Its name comes from the many sawmills that were built there. These sawmills cut down trees to make wood. The area was a good place for sawmills because a railroad ran through Caldwell County. This made it easy to move wood.
Sawmills officially became a town in 1988. Before that, it was just a community. The people in Sawmills decided to become a town because nearby towns, Granite Falls and Hudson, were trying to attract businesses to the area. Becoming a town helped Sawmills compete for these businesses.
