Scaleber Force is a beautiful waterfall in North Yorkshire, England. It is also known as Scaleber Foss or Scaleber Waterfall. This waterfall is about 40-foot (12 m) tall. It is formed by Stockdale Beck, which later becomes Long Preston Beck. This water then flows into the River Ribble.

Scaleber Force is located between the towns of Settle and Long Preston. The waterfall was created by natural cracks in the Earth's crust. These cracks are part of a larger system called the South Craven Fault. Because it is so pretty, Scaleber Force is a very popular place for tourists to visit.

What's in a Name?

Scaleber Force has a few different names. You might hear it called Scaleber Waterfall, Scaleber Force, or Scaleber Foss. The word "Foss" comes from an old language called Old Norse. In Old Norse, "Foss" means waterfall. The word "Force" also comes from this same root.

So, "Foss" and "Force" both mean the same thing here. Even though they are similar, official maps usually call it Scaleber Force. When people who live nearby say "Scaleber," it often sounds like Scallyber. But some people also say Scale-ber.

How the Waterfall Was Formed

Scaleber Force sits on a major crack in the Earth's crust. This crack is known as the South Craven Fault. Over a very long time, the moving water has worn away the soft rock. This wearing away has created a deep valley, or gorge.

At the top of the waterfall, you can see large rocks that look like boulders. These are made of limestone. The limestone found at Scaleber Force was formed a long, long time ago. It dates back to a period called the Viséan age.

Visiting Scaleber Force

This amazing waterfall is found in Scaleber Wood. This wood is a 10-acre (4 ha) area of trees managed by the Woodland Trust. It is about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) southeast of Settle. It is also about 2.5 miles (4 km) north of Long Preston.

Scaleber Force is a favorite spot for many people. Walkers and bike riders can easily reach it. There is even a bike route called the Settle Loop that passes by the waterfall. You can also enjoy the Settle Caves and Waterfalls Walk. This walk includes Scaleber Force, along with another waterfall called Catrigg Force. It also features several natural caves.

Some people believe that a famous musician, Edward Elgar, was inspired by this area. He often walked around the Ribblesdale countryside. He would walk with his friend, Dr. Buck, who lived in Settle. Scaleber Force is a great place for photographers and people who love nature. The water flows down in two main parts, landing in a pool at the bottom.
