History of Scandia
The first American flag in Kansas was raised near Scandia in 1806. However, people did not settle there until much later. Swedish immigrants were the first to make their homes in the area. They first called their settlement New Scandinavia.
The idea for the Scandia settlement came from crop failures in Sweden during the 1860s. In 1868, a group called the Scandinavian Agricultural Society of Chicago bought land. They formed a new community along the Republican River. The name was officially changed to Scandia in 1876. Scandia became an official city in 1879. In the early 1900s, it was an important place for trade and travel. Today, it is a quiet rural community.
Scandia has several old houses from its early days. One is the Wohlfort Mansion, built in the 1890s. It was built by Thure Wohlfort, who was one of the first people to help start Scandia.
