A scarecrow is a figure that looks like a human. It is usually made from sticks and dressed in old clothes. Farmers place scarecrows in their fields after planting seeds. The main goal is to scare away birds. Birds like crows and sparrows often eat seeds. If birds eat too many seeds, the farmer will not have a good harvest. Scarecrows help protect the crops.
Scarecrows in Stories and Books
Scarecrows are not just for farms; they also appear in many stories. For example, Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote a tale called "Feathertop" where a scarecrow comes to life. Perhaps the most famous scarecrow in literature is the one from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. This classic book was written by L. Frank Baum.
