Scarouady facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Scarouady was an important Oneida leader. He lived in a place called Logstown. Sometimes, the Lenape people called him Monacatuatha. He had many different spellings for his name, like Scarowady or Skaruntia.

Scarouady was a "half-king" alongside another leader named Tanacharison. They both helped lead the Iroquois people and their allies in the Ohio Valley. They did not like it when the French started moving into their lands.

Early Leadership

In 1747, Scarouady and Tanacharison were sent to Logstown. Their job was to watch over the Iroquois allies. Scarouady was in charge of the Shawnee, and Tanacharison looked after the Lenape.

Standing Up to the French

By 1753, the French were causing a lot of trouble. Scarouady met with leaders from Pennsylvania and Virginia. He tried to convince them to take action against the French. The situation became so dangerous that in June 1754, Scarouady made a tough choice. He burned his village at Logstown to keep it from falling into French hands. Then, he and his people moved to Aughwick to be safe.

Role in the French and Indian War

Scarouady was a part of the Braddock Expedition in 1754. This was a big military effort by the British. He was also a very good speaker, known as an orator. He worked closely with William Johnson, a British official. Together, they tried to keep the Shawnee and Lenape tribes on the side of the British during the French and Indian War. Their efforts were important for the British war goals.

Legacy

The town of Monaca, Pennsylvania, was named in honor of Scarouady's other name, Monacatootha. This shows how important he was in the history of the region.
